VIN Decoding Explained: What Those 17 Characters Actually Tell You

Every car built since 1981 carries a 17-character VIN, and most buyers never read it. That’s a mistake — the VIN is the vehicle’s birth certificate, criminal record, and passport rolled into one code.

The Three Sections

Characters 1-3 (World Manufacturer Identifier): where it was built and who built it. Position 1 is the country code — 1, 4, 5 = USA; J = Japan; W = Germany; Z = Italy.

Characters 4-9 (Vehicle Descriptor): model, body type, engine, and — critically — character 9, the check digit. It’s computed from a formula over the other 16 characters; if a cloned or altered VIN fails the math, the title is fake. Any seller who won’t let you verify it is waving a red flag.

Characters 10-17: character 10 encodes the model year (letter cycle), 11 is the plant, and the last six are the serial number — the actual fingerprint.

The 30-Second Buyer’s Check

1. Read the VIN on the dash (visible through the windshield) AND the door jamb sticker — they must match
2. Verify the check digit with any free online decoder
3. Confirm the year code matches the seller’s claims
4. Run the full VIN for history before any money changes hands
